The Bergamo Ensemble is one of the UK's leading contemporary music ensembles. Formed in 1999 by Michael Downes and James Widden, it has an enviable record in commissioning and performing new pieces from the cutting-edge of new music. It has given over a dozen premieres of work by some of Britain’s leading young composers, and has recently recorded its first CD, of works written for the ensemble by Roderick Watkins and Jeremy Thurlow. For more information about the CD, or to purchase a copy, please contact james@bergamoensemble.co.uk.
The ensemble is strongly committed to educational work: it has frequently worked with composer/animateurs such as Tansy Davies and Mark Bowden and has formed collaborative relationships with schools across the south-east of England. For more details on our educational work, and to see how to become involved in the ensemble's Schools' Programme, see Education.
