Education
The Bergamo Ensemble has a strong commitment to educational work related to and informed by its public performances. All of the performers who work with the Ensemble have parallel careers in music education, teaching pupils ranging from Key Stage 1 to postgraduate level, and they bring a wealth of experience to their work with the Ensemble. Public education events given by the Ensemble have included a workshop for university-level composers with John Woolrich, a seminar with Jonathan Harvey exploring his Song Offerings and Nataraja, and a workshop with Julian Johnson of Oxford University's Music Faculty introducing the music of Webern. The Ensemble is also increasingly taking its work into schools, and has recently mounted successful and innovative education projects in schools in Kent, Medway, Surrey and Hampshire.
The Bergamo Ensemble's education projects offer GCSE and A level pupils the chance:
- to work with a leading young composer: Tansy Davies and Mark Bowden are among those who have recently led education projects for the Ensemble
- to explore key works of the twentieth-century repertoire, from the inside: recent projects have focused on Stravinsky's Septet and Dumbarton Oaks, and Copland's Appalachian Spring, and we are planning projects for next year based on Schoenberg's First Chamber Symphony
- to have their own music commented on, performed and recorded by sympathetic and accomplished performers
